Culture, Identity, and Society

Culture Identity and Society are prevalent concepts throughout this class. In order to understand rhetoric is in important to understand the culture that we live in as well as the society that we live in along with the identity of the audience that views the rhetoric. All of the concepts in this course are interrelated. It is imperative to understand all of them to understand one of them. We started this class with an research paper all about rhetoric and things that are seen in our society. We also created a multimedia project that incorporated rhetoric in some way.

At a Glance pg. 174

I liked taking in the paper as a whole and taking in the big picture. It helped with understanding the problems I had with the fluidity of the entire paper. Normally I would have taken the paper in sentence by sentence. I also like reading a hard copy better than on the screen. It is easier to analyze the paper as if I was in the place of the audience instead of actually reading my own paper. I do not like to revise out of order because the paper will not be read out of order.

Plagiarism

Starting when a person starts to write essays they are told not to copy each other and then not to plagiarize. It is important to avoid plagiarism because obviously in the simplest terms it is cheating and as students and as a person we have an academic and moral responsibility for our actions. Another obvious reason it is important to not plagiarize is because you could fail or get a zero on the assignment. Deeper than that, plagiarizing devalues the efforts of the original author. It is hard for many people to see things from a different perspective. Would you want someone to turn in your work that you worked hard on? It "cheats yourself" as many people say because you do not learn anything by plagiarizing.

In America the awareness for domestic abuse has increasingly grown over the past few decades. Domestic abuse can affect those involved for the rest of their life. In this paper I will discuss how different organizations uses visual rhetoric to make domestic abuse aware and prevent it.
For sources I will use different websites that aim to prevent domestic abuse. I will use some government websites as well as sites by organizations like the Red Cross.
The most difficult part of this essay will be trying to present an argument against domestic abuse because I have not been involved with it personally.

DK pg. 27

The audience would care about the topic of family issues because most people know someone who has been affected by family issues such as abortion, abuse, and divorce.
The topic addresses the assignments purposes because it is a cultural, social, and political issue that people hear about every day.
This topic is rich enough to write a paper of this length because there is a lot of information on this topic.

When i googled "family issues" several government sites and many sites from legitimate sources came up.

Super Bowl Ad

After watching the series of Budweiser commercials, I believe that the funniest is the ad with the Clydesdale that competes in fetch with the Dalmatian. The horse is not only competing in fetch but also for the owners attention. The owner throws a stick and a Dalmatian brings it back and he says, "Good boy," and pets the dog. Then the horse goes and brings back an entire tree, and the owner under his breath says "Show off." The commercial appeals to pathos particularly because of the humor. Budweiser knew that the audience would be an average American that watches football.

visual rhetoric review

From Allison's essay I learned about how women were looked down upon during WWI and WWII to the extent that there were specific female-only units. She used her writing strategies very effectively throughout the essay.

From Laura's essay I learned about how Nike promoted women sports and equipment. They use a very interesting slogan "The Greatest Team You've Never Heard Of." She also talks a lot about how teams are stronger because of the different abilities of the team members.

Visual Rhetoric Example

I will use a few ads from the Nike Just Do It campaign for my example for visual rhetoric.
pg. 21
1. The images do try to persuade the audience.
2. There are sufficient elements to analyze.
3. The intended audience are athletes.
4. I think that the author is trying to prove that their brand is the best or the toughest.

Thesis
The three Nike Just Do It ads all motivate the audience to give an extra effort when competing in athletics which implies that Nike gives and extra effort in making their products.

My name is Russ Clark. I am from Lexington, South Carolina. I grew up playing and watching sports, loving music, and loving being outdoors and active. In high school I played football, threw shot put and wrestled. I also played trumpet in the concert band and jazz band. I am currently an athletic trainer here at Clemson. I have one younger brother who is seventeen. I have a very friendly black lab and a mixed cat. Currently my major is biological sciences and initially I intended on becoming and athletic orthopedic surgeon, but I am uncertain at the moment. I like to travel. I have been many places including Colorado, Hawaii, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. I like to snow ski, fish, hunt and be on the lake and the beach. Overall I'm pretty friendly and easy to get along with. As in the words of the great thinker Forrest Gump, "Thats all I have to say about that."

Visual Rhetoric pg 46

The one Saab advertisement says Air-crafted at the bottom. The car doors are spread apart like air plane wings and it is set on an airport runway. Generally these things make people think of a fast sports car, speed and power. At the top of the ad the slogan born from jets is written next to the company's logo reinforcing the speed and power theme.
The Ford Escape Hybrid ad is set in a forest implying the idea of good fuel economy and being "green". Kermit the frog is at under the car saying "I guess it is easy being green." At the bottom the 36 is much bigger and bolder than the rest of the text around it. Normally SUVs aren't known for having good fuel economy so Ford is trying to oppose that conception.

Visual Narrative Essay

Visual Narrative Essay

Russ Clark

Half asleep I hear my alarm on my clock radio is it a radio commercial trying to get me to go buy some car that I do not need with money I do not have. It is 8am. I climbed off of my loft and stumble to the bathroom and notice all sorts of posters for different fraternities, FCA, and all sorts of functions on the bulletin board, the walls and the doors.

I walk to the dining hall for breakfast and notice more fliers and such on the walls as I pass by the post office and other places. They all are very vibrantly colored and have slogans in big bold letters at the top all of them wanting money or time. Walking to my 9am class I pass by the library with people from different groups sitting at tables passing out yet more fliers. I take my seat in a middle row and end my morning routine.
